Aether's functioning is based on the peer-to-peer protocol and on file exchange applications such as BitTorrent, but unlike these applications, Aether doesn't distribute files or cut the connection after the reception of the latter. Instead, Aether maintains the connection between users to create online discussion rooms without the intermediation of servers.

How Aether works is quite simple. A user disseminates a message to all other users that connect to him/her. When these users vote that information positively, they start sharing out the same text, so that that message starts spreading naturally.

Aether is anonymous and encrypted and, in fact, to guarantee a greater democratization in the dissemination of the message, usernames are not unique, so nobody stands out from the rest and the moderation of the contents is only carried out by means of the voting system.
